Concept Statement

The ‘Bloom’ draws on visuals of the Aristolochia macrophylla, a flower that blooms at night, to best represent light in the absence of dark. Made through the process of wood bending and simple disassembly of electrical components, the usage of yellow light was to portray the night sky of the dark above. For those who find solace in nature, these night-blooming plants provide a sense of intrigue and mystery, for its irregular life cycle.

A design challenge was presented of whether to cover the sides of the lamp or leave the sides bare. After multiple tests with Hanji, a decision was made to leave the sides bare to best accentuate the accent of the maple wood.

Project Specs

The 'Bloom' is a maple lamp measuring 360 mm long, 250 mm wide, and 410 mm high. The upper decorative portion (360 x 250 x 330 mm) was assembled first, followed by the base construction. To create the flower illusion, wood was subjected to wood bending. The base, which had a ratio of 185-185-80 mm, was made up of a square joined to a cylinder that had a hole drilled through it for cable management.
